Objectives of the Gender Innovation Principles
The Gender Innovation Principles serve as a guide for any organization trying to adopt a gender-responsive approach, suggesting entry points and actions to be undertaken.
The Principles aim to set standards and bring together like-minded organizations opened to sharing experience and knowledge to accelerate progress in their respective sectors. They engage GICC members and signatories to look at the effects their innovations have on people’s lives, especially for women and girls, and improve their organizational and business practices.
The principles provide private and public sector organizations with the benchmark for how to include women and women’s needs throughout the innovation life cycle so that they are at the heart of the design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of the innovation process.
Our main objectives are:
1. Advance understanding on gender-responsive innovation
CLOSING THE GENDER GAP ADDS $10-17 trillion to the global economy
A gender-responsive approach means going beyond acknowledging and raising awareness of gender gaps, to make sure women’s and men’s concerns and experiences are equally integrated in the design of innovative products or services and that due consideration is given to gender norms, roles and relations.
Signatories are encouraged to go beyond acknowledging the need for gender equality in innovation roles, to take action throughout their innovation cycle to ensure that women’s needs are incorporated at every phase.
2. Create a space for dialogue and knowledge exchange
Innovation and technology impact our daily lives, however there are very few spaces where industry leaders, policy makers, civil society, users can discuss potential risks and news tools that can be developed to innovate responsibly, detect errors, correct bias and ensure the next generation of innovation is gender-responsive and benefit all of humanity.
Signatories are encouraged to share information, identify areas for research and speak publicly on challenges and opportunities of adopting a gender-responsive approach to innovation.
3. Encourage action and adoption of best practices
There are limited guidance and resources available to support institutions who are trying to integrate gender throughout their innovation cycle and strengthen their commitment towards a positive contribution to reach gender equality. The GICC aims to be a platform where everyone can find support to identify concrete actions to adopt new processes based on best practices.
Signatories are encouraged to take action to review their current approach to gender-responsive innovation, identify areas for improvement, document their experience to share it with other stakeholders and develop a common set of tools and evidence.
